Facts about breast cancer

Breast cancer is the most common cause of death in Germany under the cancers in women. There are about 48,000 new cases of breast cancer each year in Germany. Approximately one in ten women is affected during her life. 75% of breast cancer cases affect women at the age of 50 years or later. There are approximately 18,000 deaths caused by breast cancer in Germany per year.

Tumors of the breast develop, for example, in the mammary glands, in fat or connective tissue of the breast.

Tumors that go undetected and untreated, usually metastasize first to the surrounding breast tissue, then to the lymph nodes under the arms and finally to further remote body parts. Therefore, the self-examination and routine examination at the gynecologist for every woman is so important. In a timely diagnosis of the tumor, there are good chances of recovery.

If the tumor must be surgically removed, breast-conserving surgery is standard today - if possible. This possibility is more likely, the earlier the cancer is detected.

During surgery, the tumor mass itself, and more recently the "sentinel lymph node" in the armpit is removed completely. If the entire breast has to be surgically removed, it may immediately or later be reconstructed again by own tissue or by an implant.

Early detection, signs, symptoms

The following signs may possibly suggest breast cancer - but they do not have to:

  • New (one-sided) hardening of the breast or armpit

  • Retraction of a nipple
  • Secretions from the nipple

  • Sudden difference in size of the breasts.

Anzeichen von Brustkrebs: selbst untersuchen

As a cancer of the breast can also run without any recognizable abnormalities, early diagnosis is a "must" for every woman. The gynecologist thereby scans the breast and armpits exactly. However, in a palpable node or another external change, the tumor is usually already relatively large. But it is particularly important to detect breast cancer at a stage as early as possible, because then the chances of recovery are best.

The best way to discover small, not palpable or otherwise detectable breast tumors, offers mammography.

Implementation of breast cancer early diagnosis

Mammography is an indispensable part of breast cancer early diagnosis. We offer in our practice the all-digital low-dose mammography with the best up-to-date equipment from Siemens.

Volldigitale Mammographie

When indicated, we can perform for you, as legally insured patient, a mammogram on a referral from your family doctor or your gynecologist.

Of course, for you as a private patient, we can perform a mammogram, too. This will be paid easily by your private health insurance.

The Federal German mammography screening provides early diagnosis to a certain age group of legally insured women under the premise of cost optimization. Important standards in our practice such as anamnesis and palpation by a doctor, any necessary additional investigation by ultrasound, discussion of the findings with the doctor etc. are omitted in the screening program for reasons of cost. We therefor do not offer the Federal German mammography screening in our practice.

Ab wann Mammographie

From which age to start with mammography examinations and in which intervals depends on the individual risk factors of every woman. The international professional associations give guidelines, which reflect the latest developments in medical science. The time intervals for mammography depend also from the image evaluation of the radiologist and her/his recommendation for follow-up exams. For image evaluation, additional tests such as ultrasound and special x-rays are necessary in some cases.

Volldigitale Niedrigdosis-Mammographie

To answer the question of when the first mammogram should be done and at what interval follow-up examinations, the Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) as the official responsible for the radiation protection has published on its website the currently applicable guidelines on radiological examination of breast disease.

The examinations are carried out by certified radiologists with devices that meet the strict European Guidelines.

We ourselves have demonstrated our special knowledge and experience in mammography as part of the certification.

Our mammography unit itself is certified as well.
